South Sudan president fires revenue chief, appoints new head

South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir, has dismissed Africano Mande as Commissioner General of the South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA) and appointed Simon Akuei Deng to replace him.

The announcement, made via state-run television (SSBC), did not specify the reasons behind Mande’s removal. Akuei, previously the Secretary General of the South Sudan National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, takes over the role amid ongoing economic challenges in the country, where oil revenues make up nearly 98% of the national budget.

The SSRA, established in 2016, is responsible for non-oil revenue collection, including domestic taxes and customs.
