Preparations are in full swing for an emergency summit of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) heads of state and government aimed at addressing the persisting crisis in Sudan, as South Sudan takes an active role in these initiatives.
The regional bloc, IGAD, holds a pivotal position in endeavors to reinstate peace and stability in the neighboring Sudan.
James Pitia Morgan, South Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, affirmed that President Salva Kiir has directed the government’s full involvement in the summit’s arrangements.
“The IGAD secretariat is currently finalizing the summit agenda and is seeking input from member states,” explained Minister Morgan. “These inputs reflect the visions of the IGAD leaders on how they envision restoring peace and stability in Sudan.”
The Minister commended the commitment of regional, international communities, and rival Sudanese factions to the peace process under the Jeddah platform. He revealed ongoing talks between the Sudanese military and Rapid Support Forces mediated by the Saudi-US team, endorsed by the African Union, IGAD, and other global partners.
“These efforts are not intended to undermine Sudan’s unity, territorial integrity, or sovereignty,” emphasized Minister Morgan.
South Sudan emphasizes the necessity of comprehending the nuances of internal political issues. The country advocates for a Sudanese-led dialogue, supplemented by regional and international support, to resolve the conflict.
