South Sudan, Uganda form team on deadly clashes

South Sudan and Uganda have agreed to form a joint committee to investigate deadly border clashes that recently claimed six lives. The decision followed a Saturday meeting in Juba between Ugandan army chief Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and his South Sudanese counterpart, Gen. Dau Aturjong Nyuol. South Sudanese army spokesperson Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang announced that the 14-member committee will have equal representation from both armies.

The army chiefs also met at State House to discuss the worsening security situation along the border before holding talks with Vice President Benjamin Bol Mel. Koang said the committee’s temporary headquarters will be established in Gulu, northern Uganda, where investigations into the Kajo Keji County clashes will begin.

The body will seek to determine the causes of the violence and draft recommendations aimed at preventing future border disputes between the two nations. A reciprocal visit by South Sudan’s military to Kampala is planned at the request of Gen. Kainerugaba, according to Koang.
