Sudan, currently facing its tenth month of civil conflict, is grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis, with nearly nine million people internally displaced, as reported by the UN.
Compounding the challenges, a recent internet blackout has exacerbated difficulties, hindering access to crucial services such as financial transactions and communication channels.
In response to this crisis, individuals affected by displacement in Sudan are seeking alternative means for internet connectivity. Notably, Elon Musk’s satellite-based internet service, Starlink, has emerged as a vital lifeline, enabling access to essential online resources.
Suliman Baldo, head of the Sudan Transparency and Policy Tracker, highlighted the innovative use of Starlink by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who reportedly lease out internet access to civilians. Baldo emphasized the importance of online platforms for cash transfers through banking applications, which have become crucial for survival in displaced communities.
