Sudan cholera outbreak death toll surpasses 1,300

The cholera outbreak in Sudan has tragically claimed the lives of 1,316 people, according to official reports.

General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army backed Ministry of Health confirmed the rising death toll in a statement released on December 31, highlighting the severity of the outbreak.

The total number of cholera cases in the country now stands at 49,554, with the situation continuing to worsen in various regions.

Rains and floods, which began in June, have exacerbated the spread of the disease, overwhelming local communities.

In response to the crisis, cholera was declared as an epidemic on August 12, intensifying efforts to contain the disease.

The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs had earlier reported that 3.4 million children in Sudan were at risk due to the epidemic.

UNICEF, the UN’s International Children’s Fund, responded promptly, sending 1.4 million doses of cholera vaccine to the affected areas on October 5.

The ongoing conflict and strained healthcare system in Sudan have compounded the challenges, making it increasingly difficult to manage the outbreak.

As the crisis deepens, the international community continues to provide support, but the road to recovery remains long and uncertain.
