The UN refugee agency warned that conditions for those displaced by Sudan’s war are worsening due to the El NiƱo rainy season, leading to severe humanitarian challenges and famine amid climate change impacts.
Heavy rains and floods have already affected tens of thousands in Sudan, causing displacement, injuries, and deaths.
Refugees and internally displaced people are most vulnerable as the situation becomes increasingly dire.
Over 11,000 people, including refugees and local communities in Kassala, have been hit by severe floods recently.
In the Shagarab refugee camp, more than 400 shelters were damaged, leaving many without adequate protection.
UNHCR and local authorities have found a new site for affected families, planning to host around 800 displaced families.
So far, 400 emergency tents have been set up, and 200 families have been relocated despite the ongoing rains.
The agency is also preparing relief items, clearing drainage, and building dikes to prevent similar disasters elsewhere.
It launched a $40 million appeal but has only secured $5 million, leaving urgent needs unmet.
