A Sudanese MiG warplane was shot down in the eastern Nile region of Khartoum, the capital city, according to a statement issued by the official spokesman for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Saturday.
The circumstances surrounding the incident and the fate of the pilot remain unclear.
The RSF, a fighting group against Sudan’s military leadership, claimed responsibility for shooting down the aircraft.
The statement did not specify the reason for targeting the military jet, nor did it provide any details about the type of MiG warplane involved.
This incident comes amidst ongoing tensions between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).
Clashes erupted in Khartoum in July 2023, with both sides accusing the other of launching airstrikes and ground attacks.
The city has been relatively calm since then, but the shooting down of the warplane raises concerns about a potential escalation in the conflict.
The Sudanese army has yet to comment on the matter.
