Sudan importers warn customs hikes fuel black markets

Warnings are mounting across Sudan’s import sector as traders say rising customs dollar rates are reviving the country’s long-dormant shadow economy.

The National Chamber of Importers said repeated increases have pushed businesses toward informal markets, where regulation fades and state oversight weakens.

The chamber also rejected the Advanced Acknowledgment of Shipments system, describing it as a direct threat to national security and information integrity.

In a statement, it warned the policy mix could deepen economic instability, erode transparency, and cast long shadows over Sudan’s fragile trade environment.
