Sudan’s annual inflation rate soared to 136.67% in the first half of 2024, according to the state statistics agency’s report released Monday.
The dramatic increase is attributed to rising food and medicine costs, along with higher housing rents.
The Northern State reported the highest regional inflation rate at 721.71%, while East Darfur State had the lowest at 109.61%.
January experienced the steepest monthly inflation rise at 18.32%, driven by soaring expenses in healthcare, housing, and food.
The ongoing conflict has led to mass displacement, disrupted the economy, and significantly increased food prices.
Additionally, the Sudanese pound has depreciated sharply against the dollar, highlighting the severe economic difficulties Sudan faces as it attempts to recover from the conflict.
