Sudanese military apprehended Sattea al-Haj, head of the Nasserist Party, on Monday, coinciding with the detention of two Sudanese Congress Party leaders.
These arrests are part of a recent surge in mass detentions by Sudanese military authorities, targeting resistance committee members, prominent anti-war figures, and emergency service volunteers.
The Democratic Alliance of Lawyers issued a statement disclosing al-Haj’s arrest by army intelligence upon his arrival in Port Sudan from Madani, Al-Jazira State.
Al-Haj, a notable member of the Sudanese Bar Association’s steering committee, played an active role in drafting the transitional government’s constitutional declaration signed by military and political forces leading the protests against dictator al-Bashir in 2019.
In another incident, the Sudanese Congress Party in Red Sea State reported a security force raid on its Port Sudan headquarters on December 30, resulting in the arrest of two party members and two individuals.
The party strongly opposed the suppression of Sudanese citizens’ freedoms, condemned ongoing detentions, demanded the immediate release of detainees, and held security forces fully accountable for their safety.
Sudanese authorities have intensified efforts against the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) and other civilian groups opposing the war.
They accuse these groups of collaborating with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a group engaged in an eight-month-long conflict against the army.
