Sudan mine collapse kills 15 workers

The collapse of the “Mohammed Tawfiq” mine in Sudan’s Northern State has left 15 miners dead, casting a shadow over the country’s mining sector.

The Sudanese Mineral Resources Company said another miner was injured and taken to hospital, while the victims’ bodies were handed to their families after official procedures.

Company General Manager Mohammed Taher Omar said emergency teams, working alongside mining and rescue police, launched immediate operations to recover the victims and provide first aid.

The tragedy unfolded in the Samna area of Wadi Halfa locality, where rescuers raced against time following the collapse of the mine.

The company said the site had previously been closed by its Environment and Safety Department because it was considered too dangerous for mining activities.

According to the company, the miners entered the closed site despite repeated safety warnings, leading to the fatal accident.

The incident underscores the persistent risks facing miners in Sudan, where hazardous working conditions and unauthorised access to closed sites continue to claim lives despite safety measures.
