Sudan on the edge of tribal warfare, advocacy group warns

The Advocacy Group for Peace in Sudan (AGPS) has issued a grave warning, stating that the country is on the verge of a catastrophic tribal war.

The AGPS reported General al-Burhan’s forces (SAF) have increased airstrikes targeting civilian areas in Darfur, Kordofan, and Al-Jazirah, causing significant loss of life and destruction of infrastructure. AGPS added that there was also a spike in attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in eastern Al-Jazirah state, resulting in casualties and displacement.

The AGPS noted that both sides have dangerously intensified their conflict narratives, promoting ethnically charged rhetoric that rallies communities along ethnic and regional lines.

This has led to a concerning rise in tribal loyalty and animosity, particularly in regions such as the Butana Plains, Nile River, Northern states, Darfur, Kordofan, and Eastern Sudan.

Community leaders and influencers, including artists, are fueling calls for retribution against entire communities linked to various social groups. “This alarming escalation threatens to plunge the conflict into a catastrophic phase of tribal and regional alignment, risking widespread massacres and a profound humanitarian crisis,” the AGPS cautioned.

The group urged the international community to take immediate and decisive action to prevent tribal mobilization and avert a humanitarian disaster. They called for accountability for all parties involved in the conflict to address the looming threat of genocidal crimes.
