Sudan starts Nile dock project to revive river link with Egypt

Sudan’s Ministry of Transport has begun construction of a new Nile river dock in Wadi Halfa, in the Northern State, as part of efforts to revive river transport between Sudan and Egypt, according to media reports.

The ministry said the River Transport Authority has started completing the technical infrastructure of the project, noting that the ongoing work aims to restart the Wadi Halfa–Aswan navigation route after a suspension that lasted nearly six years.

Transport Minister and head of the River Transport Authority, Saif al Nasr, said technical teams have already begun preparing the dock to receive river vessels, stressing that the move represents a key step toward restoring commercial transport and passenger movement along the Nile.

The project is linked to an Egyptian grant allocated to Sudan in 2021. Implementation began in March 2023 but was halted following the outbreak of armed conflict, before work resumed in early January 2026.

Investors in the river transport sector have voiced concerns over the impact of restrictions on entry visas for Sudanese citizens travelling to Egypt, warning that continued limitations could reduce expected demand and affect the economic viability of the route.

They have called on the Ministry of Transport to clarify measures being taken to address visa issues and ease passenger movement between the two countries.

Sources said Khartoum and Cairo are currently working on arrangements to adopt more flexible visa procedures for Sudanese travellers, which would facilitate travel once the river route becomes operational.
