Sudan urges Arab League to counter meddling

Sudan’s General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s political arm has urgently called for an Arab League meeting to counter what it describes as foreign interference in its internal affairs.

The government Information Minister Khalid Aleisir announced the request on Monday after discussions with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit in Port Sudan.

The meeting, aimed at “neutralizing interventions,” is part of Sudan’s push to address nations influencing its domestic matters through the Arab League.

Minister Aleisir urged the league to establish a framework limiting international involvement in Sudan’s national issues, according to state media.

“We trust the Arab League to take a decisive role, especially when others have distanced themselves from our crisis,” Aleisir stated.

His remarks targeted organizations like the African Union, which suspended Sudan’s membership in 2021, while the Arab League maintained relations.

In November, al Burhan, accused certain nations of hostility and vowed to respond assertively to ambiguous foreign stances.

Aleisir reiterated Sudan’s core principles: “No interference in our affairs, no aggression against our people, and no division of our state.”

Aboul Gheit, during his two-day visit, held a separate meeting with al Burhan, which was described as “highly positive” by Sudan’s Sovereign Council.

The Arab League expressed its commitment to supporting Sudan’s sovereignty while highlighting the humanitarian toll of the ongoing conflict.
