Khaled Omar Youssef, a leader in Sudan’s “Sumud” alliance, warned on Saturday that the country’s civil war risks spreading across its borders into the wider region.
He told Sky News Arabia that recent tensions with Chad were “very dangerous,” citing Sudan’s position at the crossroads of the Sahel and Horn of Africa.
Omar said Sudan’s overlap with the Great Lakes region and its Red Sea access made the war a growing threat to regional security.
He rejected the idea that the Chad border tensions stemmed from an isolated military error, accusing the Sudanese Armed Forces leadership of pushing the conflict beyond national borders.
Confrontation with neighboring states, he warned, would deepen the crisis and multiply the dangers facing Sudan and its neighbors alike.
He cautioned the war could become a regional “ball of fire,” making peace a shared international concern rather than a purely internal matter.
Omar also backed extending Darfur’s arms embargo across all of Sudan, blaming foreign weapons flows for prolonging the fighting.
