Hanan Hassan Hussein Khalifa, a prominent human rights lawyer and activist, has been denied a passport renewal by the Sudanese embassy in Uganda.
This decision has sparked accusations of political interference and discrimination.
The “Emergency Lawyers” group, to which Hassan belongs, condemned the denial, asserting that it contradicts Sudanese law and international human rights standards.
They emphasized that the Sudanese Public Prosecution, cited as responsible for the decision, lacks the authority under the Passports and Immigration Law of 2015 to deny passport issuance.
The incident has raised concerns about undue influence by General Burhan’s military and army controlled executive branches over legal processes.
The Emergency Lawyers group accused the de facto authorities, including army leadership and senior government officials, of discriminatory practices in passport matters based on political and ethnic considerations.
The Sudanese Congress Party has joined in denouncing the denial as a violation of Hassan’s rights and the rule of law, criticizing what they view as an illegitimate military-led government in Port Sudan for its role in this decision.
The controversy unfolds against a backdrop of heightened international scrutiny of human rights issues in Sudan, particularly concerning freedom of movement and political expression.
