Sudanese political and civil groups have voiced growing opposition to African Union backing of Prime Minister Kamil Idris’s proposed peace initiative.
African Union Commission Chair Mahmoud Ali Youssef described the proposal as a viable framework for peace, prompting swift backlash inside Sudan.
Critics warned the endorsement risks altering the course of war and peace by appearing to side with one party.
Jaafar Hassan of the Resilience Alliance said the remarks showed bias and could prolong fighting rather than protect civilians.
He argued Idris’s proposal was not a neutral initiative but a negotiating position from a party directly involved in the conflict.
Sadiq al-Ma’moun Adam said the African Union’s stance confused the political scene and emboldened authorities in Port Sudan.
He stressed the Quartet Initiative remains the only internationally recognised path, supported by the United States and regional organisations.
Opposition figures urged the international community to enforce that roadmap and press all parties to end the war and civilian suffering.
