Sudanese journalist Abdel Jalil Mohammed Abdel Jalil was forcibly taken by General al-Burhan’s forces (SAF) personnel in Kassala city on Sunday with no official charges or judicial warrant.
His family confirmed the abduction, stating he was deprived of communication and denied access to his medication or legal counsel.
The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate expressed deep concern over the incident, highlighting that the journalist’s disappearance was a clear violation of legal procedures.
According to his family, Abdel Jalil was seized from his home in a manner that resembled kidnapping. His phone was confiscated, and he was prevented from informing his family or contacting his lawyer.
Unconfirmed reports suggest his detention is linked to his investigative writings on alleged corruption within the Hajj and Umrah sectors, which may have angered the deputy governor of Kassala.
The Journalists Syndicate condemned the actions as a direct assault on press freedom and freedom of expression, calling them a breach of both national and international legal standards.
The syndicate has called for the immediate release of Abdel Jalil and an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his abduction. They hold local authorities, including the Deputy Governor and acting Minister of Social Affairs, accountable for his safety and wellbeing.
The organization has also urged international bodies and freedom of expression advocates to pressure the Sudanese government to cease such repressive tactics and reaffirm that journalism should be met with transparency and lawful processes, not intimidation and violence.
