Yasir Arman, a prominent figure within the Civil Forces Alliance Taqqadum, has called for a halt to the ongoing war in Sudan during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan, set to commence on March 10th.
Using the X platform, Arman issued a plea for a ceasefire directed towards the commanders of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces this past Saturday.
The United Nations has been sounding alarms since late last year, warning of the potential for severe hunger and famine-like conditions for civilians in Sudan’s conflict zones by the approaching summer. The conflict has already left approximately 30 million people, or nearly two-thirds of Sudan’s population, in need of humanitarian assistance.
Arman, in his call for a truce, expressed the hope that both civilians and military personnel could unite to cease hostilities throughout the holy month of Ramadan. He emphasized the importance of granting civilians freedom of movement and the opportunity for family reunification during this sacred time.
Calling on the Sudanese people, the international community, and UN agencies, Arman urged for support in amplifying his plea for a Ramadan ceasefire. Specifically naming entities such as the African Union Peace and Security Council, the UN Security Council, and the League of Arab States, he called for collective efforts to bring about peace.
Additionally, Arman appealed to neighboring countries—Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates—to play a role in halting the war during Ramadan and to contribute by providing and delivering much-needed humanitarian aid. Despite previous efforts by Saudi and US initiatives to persuade the Sudanese army and RSF to cease hostilities and allow humanitarian access, success has remained elusive in the war-affected regions.
