
One Sudanese refugee was killed and 18 others were injured after a vehicle carrying refugees overturned near the Rabiana area, southeast of the Libyan city of Al Kufra, health officials said on Saturday.
A medical staff member at Martyr Attia Al Kasih Hospital told media that the accident occurred around 150 kilometres southeast of Al Kufra. The hospital’s emergency department received 18 injured Sudanese refugees following the crash.
According to the medical source, a woman died as a result of the accident, while nine of the injured sustained fractures of varying severity. The remaining patients received first aid and underwent medical examinations, and are currently being kept under observation depending on their condition.
The incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by Sudanese refugees travelling across remote desert routes in southern Libya, often in unsafe vehicles and difficult conditions.
UNHCR figures from September show that Libya hosts approximately 357,000 Sudanese refugees. Around 193,000 of them are based in Al Kufra municipality near the Sudanese border.
An estimated 80,000 Sudanese refugees live in Tripoli, while about 10,000 are in Benghazi, 7,248 in Misrata, 6,190 in Zawiya, and 20,443 in Jafara.
In eastern Libya, Derna hosts roughly 5,642 Sudanese refugees, Tobruk 5,768, and the Green Mountain area about 3,822.
