Rival tribal violence spilled into the Birao refugee camp on Sunday when armed Kara tribesmen stormed a communications kiosk and fatally beat Sudanese refugee Yaqoub Osman, witnesses said. Two other Ta’aisha tribesmen were seriously injured after refusing to surrender a Starlink satellite-internet terminal.
The assault has rattled the camp’s 38,000 Sudanese residents, who fled last year’s civil war only to face renewed threats as Kara-Ta’aisha clashes along the Sudan-CAR border intensify. Dozens have died in cross-border fighting since June, local officials report.
Aid workers say panic is rising and have urged CAR authorities and UN agencies to bolster security. The UNHCR estimates 4.1 million Sudanese have fled to neighbouring states since the war began, with Birao one of the hardest-hit reception sites.
