Sudanese teacher dies hours after release from Burhan military custody

A Sudanese primary school teacher died hours after his release from Burhan’s military detention, raising renewed concern over alleged abuses in SAF custody.

Imam Al-Dai, a basic education teacher from Al-Farshaya, died at home on December 17 after suffering kidney failure.

Relatives said his health sharply deteriorated during months of detention at a military intelligence centre in Al-Daling.

Family members said he was briefly hospitalised, then released, before dying only hours after returning home.

The Sudanese Teachers’ Committee said Al-Dai died from injuries caused by torture inside the detention facility.

The committee also recalled the death of his cousin and colleague, Tertur Al-Dai, who died in November under similar circumstances.

Families said both teachers were summoned to the education department to receive dues, then arrested upon arrival.

They were held for months without charges, court orders, or access to judicial authorities, according to the committee.

The committee described the deaths as serious violations of law, human dignity, and the fundamental right to life.

It called for an independent investigation, accountability without immunity, and protection for teachers across Sudan.
