Sudanese writer Bilal criticises Burhan’s remarks on changing national flag

Sudanese journalist Diaa al-Din Bilal has criticised comments by Sovereign Council head Abdel Fattah al-Burhan about changing Sudan’s national flag, saying the idea lacks any political or national justification amid the country’s current crisis.

In a post on Facebook, Bilal said he could not find “a single political or national reason, nor any objective context, that would prompt Burhan to bring up the issue of changing the flag”, arguing that such remarks distract public attention from the central issue of protecting the state and its institutions from being pulled into further instability.

He added, “I do not know which mailbox these messages are meant for, as they divert people from their core cause and replace it with superficial debate over the colours of the national flag.”

The controversy comes at a time when Sudan faces intense military and political escalation, with growing calls to prioritise ending the war and safeguarding state institutions rather than engaging in symbolic discussions.
