Sudan’s Al Hilal to join Tanzania league amid conflict

Amidst the ongoing conflict in Sudan, Tanzania has granted permission for Sudanese powerhouse Al Hilal to participate in its football league for the upcoming season.

This decision comes as sports activities remain suspended in Sudan due to the devastating war that has resulted in significant casualties and mass displacement since April 2023.

The defending champions of Sudan’s premier league, Al Hilal, will now take to the field in the Tanzanian league starting in August, as confirmed by Clifford Mario Ndimbo, spokesperson for the Tanzanian Football Federation.

While the Khartoum-based club will compete in the Tanzanian league, they will not be eligible to claim the league title, and their matches will be considered friendly fixtures.

Ndimbo emphasized that this collaboration presents an opportunity for Tanzanian clubs to glean insights from one of Africa’s football giants, thus contributing to the growth and development of the local league.

The Tanzanian league, known for its competitiveness and passionate fanbase, stands to benefit from the inclusion of Al Hilal.

The conflict in Sudan, which commenced on April 15, 2023, has seen clashes between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

This protracted conflict has exacerbated a dire humanitarian crisis, leading to acute food shortages and pushing the nation towards the brink of famine.
