Genera Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s army is losing ground in ongoing battles against Rapid Support Forces across several key regions of the country.
Amid mounting battlefield pressure, Burhan on Thursday reshuffled his army and appointed Gen. Yasser al-Atta as the new chief of staff.
Burhan’s army announced that al-Atta replaced Gen. Mohamed al-Hussein, who was relieved of his duties during the intensifying conflict.
Burhan also appointed Abdelkhair Darjam as deputy chief of staff for administration and Mohamed Sabir as head of military intelligence.
The changes come as fighting continues between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, a war that began in April 2023.
The conflict has killed thousands of people and displaced millions, creating one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
