Sudan’s Darfur drills new wells as Nyala braces for summer

The South Darfur State Water Authority said on Monday it has begun drilling four new water wells in the Barli Valley, an area stretching north and south of Nyala, in an effort to ease chronic water shortages.

In a statement posted on the state civil administration’s official Facebook page, the authority said the project is part of early preparations for the severe water scarcity the city typically faces during the summer months.

The new wells are being drilled with support from the international aid organisation World Vision.

Recent fighting in Nyala forced several drinking-water wells out of service during the autumn, worsening an already fragile water supply.

Residents of Nyala face water shortages every summer, when the price of a barrel of drinking water rises sharply.

Earlier, the city’s emergency response room and health centres, with support from Doctors Without Borders, helped equip several state-run wells with solar power to improve water production.
