Sudan’s herders’ attacks threaten Kabkabiya’s agricultural season

Farmers in Kabkabiya, about 155 kilometres west of El Fasher, have warned that continued herder attacks on farmlands threaten to ruin this year’s harvest. Farmer Mariam Ishaq said armed herders raided farms in the Dibba “Kwa Kli” area north of Kabkabiya, destroying more than fifty acres of crops.

She said farmers were forced to flee their lands after the attackers demanded their livestock be allowed to graze on ripe crops. A community leader confirmed that farms in western Kabkabiya and Wadi Bari had faced similar incidents, warning that the season could collapse if attacks persist.

He added that the High Committee for the Agricultural Season had failed to monitor the situation or provide support to affected farmers. According to residents, the season began successfully but has deteriorated as armed herders increasingly target farms ahead of the harvest.

Witnesses reported that herders have ignored designated grazing routes and used weapons to intimidate anyone attempting to protect their crops. Clashes between herders and farmers are a recurring problem across Darfur, particularly during harvest periods when tensions over land and resources escalate.
