Sudan’s junta signs gas terminal deal with Turkey in Suakin

Sudan’s Sea Ports Authority, which is aligned with General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s army, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Turkish company Argaz to build a major gas terminal in Suakin.

The agreement was signed on Wednesday in SAF-controlled Port Sudan in the presence of junta officials and Turkish Ambassador Fatih Yildiz.

The terminal will be developed under a build-operate-transfer model and is expected to become Sudan’s first dedicated gas berth.

Sea Ports Authority Director General Engineer Gilani said the facility would handle three ships at once, boost gas supplies, reduce import costs and help lower fuel prices.

He said importers currently lose about $200 million annually because of delays in unloading ships.

Junta Minister Saif Al-Nasr Al-Tijani described Sudan-Turkey cooperation as historic, while the ministry said financial studies had been completed and were awaiting Justice Ministry approval.

Argaz representative Al-Dabbagh said construction would begin after final procedures, with the terminal expected to be operational within one to one-and-a-half years.
