Sudan’s junta Ministry of Energy and Oil has sparked widespread controversy by introducing steep annual registration and licensing fees for renewable energy equipment.
Under these new rules, business names and companies face steep registration charges of up to 1 million Egyptian pounds.
The fresh regulations also impose a levy of 1,000 pounds on every solar panel and electrical transformer.
Additionally, users must pay 1,000 pounds per kilowatt of inverter capacity and 100 pounds per ampere-hour of battery storage.
The calculated annual fees will depend directly on the specific amount of energy traded between license applicants and consumers.
By taxing the sun, this unexpected decision threatens to dim the prospects of a clean and sustainable energy future.
Applicants wishing to challenge these sudden economic measures retain the right to appeal within sixty days of notification.
