Kamil Idris was officially sworn in as General Abdel Fattah al Burhan-backed government’s new prime minister on Saturday.
The ceremony took place before Abdel Fattah al-Burhan who appointed Idris on May 19.
Idris took the oath in the presence of Lieutenant General Mohamed Al-Ghali Ali Youssef, the Red Sea State’s judiciary head.
A seasoned politician, Idris holds a PhD in international law from the University of Geneva. He previously ran for president in Sudan’s 2010 election.
Before Idris’s appointment, Dafallah Al-Haj Youssef, Sudan’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, served as caretaker prime minister and minister of Cabinet affairs.
The transitional government was formed by Burhan in April 2019 after a military coup ousted President Omar al-Bashir.
Sudan has since been engulfed in violent clashes between the Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces group, starting April 15, 2023.
The conflict has claimed over 20,000 lives and displaced around 15 million people, creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
