Sudan’s Kassala women bake path to peace with UNDP program

A group of diverse young women from Kassala recently completed a two-week training program focused on food processing and bakery skills.

Equipped with newfound knowledge and startup kits, these women are poised to become catalysts for change in their communities.

Beyond acquiring essential vocational skills, the participants have committed to sharing their expertise with other women in their respective areas.

By establishing their own businesses and training others, they are not only improving their livelihoods but also fostering social cohesion and economic empowerment.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen peacebuilding systems in Sudan.

The training workshop is a component of the Strengthening Capacities for Peace and Social Cohesion project, a joint venture between UNDP Sudan and UNICEF, funded by the UN Peacebuilding Fund.

The project aims to reduce violent conflict and enhance social harmony through various strategies, including community-based conflict resolution mechanisms, youth peace ambassador programs, and support for women’s economic empowerment.

The project has already yielded significant results.

Community-based reconciliation mechanisms have been established to address tensions between different groups, while youth peace ambassadors are actively working to promote peace and understanding.

Additionally, women have been actively involved in conflict resolution processes and have benefited from economic empowerment initiatives such as Village Saving and Lending Associations.

The workshop on food processing and bakery skills is a prime example of how these initiatives can empower women and contribute to overall peacebuilding efforts.

By investing in the potential of women, the project is helping to create a more stable and prosperous future for Sudan.

UNDP Sudan remains committed to supporting the people of Sudan and contributing to the country’s development.

Through initiatives like this, the organization aims to build a more peaceful and inclusive society where all citizens can thrive.
