Sudan’s military gov’t boycotts another peace forum

General al-Burhan’s political deputy Malik Agar boycotted a crucial peace forum in Johannesburg, South Africa, from October 4-6, 2024, due to the presence of a delegation from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Agar, scheduled to present on Sudan’s current situation, left the African Peace and Security Forum after learning of the RSF’s attendance.

Despite this, the RSF delegation, led by Brigadier General Omer Hamdan and including al-Quni Hamdan Dagalo, brother of RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, made significant strides in the event.

RSF engaged in high-level talks, including a notable meeting with South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola. The RSF stated that Lamola reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to peace in Sudan and recognized the RSF’s crucial role in maintaining stability in the region.

The Thabo Mbeki Foundation, which hosted the forum, aimed to address peace and security challenges in Africa, emphasizing the importance of inclusive dialogues with all relevant actors in conflict regions.

The RSF’s participation highlighted their significance in the Sudanese political landscape, especially as peace efforts continue.
