The Sudanese Teachers’ Committee has demanded an immediate review of a decision to suspend the salaries of around 40 teachers in North Kordofan, calling on authorities to explain its legal and administrative basis, local Sudanese media reported.
The committee said on Sunday that four teachers in Bara locality were among those affected. It urged officials to publish a full list of the teachers concerned and explain the grounds for suspending each person’s pay.
One affected teacher described receiving conflicting explanations when he sought answers. He said officials at the education ministry told him the decision had come from a security body, but staff at the General Intelligence Service subsequently denied that the agency had any involvement.
In its statement, the committee said decisions affecting salaries and financial entitlements required transparency and accountability, and that the reasons could not be withheld from teachers or the public.
It warned against exploiting Sudan’s exceptional circumstances to settle scores through state institutions or using administrative powers to deprive employees of their livelihoods without clear grounds.
The committee highlighted the case of one affected teacher who was only days away from retirement, saying his employment and financial entitlements must be protected from any measure that could jeopardise them.
State institutions must not become instruments of retaliation or punishment outside the law, the committee said.
It called on the relevant authorities to review the suspensions immediately, disclose the circumstances surrounding the decision and ensure every affected teacher can learn the reasons for the measure and challenge it through legal channels.
