Sudan’s RSF commander Dagalo welcomes US peace talks invitation

In a major diplomatic development, Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) Commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo welcomed an invitation from U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to participate in upcoming ceasefire talks.

RSF commander in a post on social media revealed discussions are scheduled to take place on August 14, 2024, in Switzerland to reach a lasting solution to end the Sudanese civil war.

These talks follow the UN-sponsored Geneva discussions held from July 11 to July 19. Initially, General al-Burhan’s SAF boycotted the Geneva talks, with only the RSF delegation attending.

Due to immense political and public backlash al-Burhan hastily sent a delegation to Geneva last week and did participate in the talks.

RSF commander thanked the efforts of the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Switzerland in organizing vital August talks.

The objective shared with the international community is to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire across the country, ensure humanitarian access to all those in need, and establish a robust monitoring and verification mechanism to implement any agreements reached, the RSF leader said.

Dagalo said the latest collaborative effort aims to address the extensive suffering and destruction that has plagued the nation since the war broke out April last year.

Sudanese leader echoed the sentiments from Blinken’s statement, emphasizing the urgent need to save lives, halt the fighting, and pave the way for a peaceful, negotiated political solution.

The goal is to restore civilian rule and embark on a path toward democratic transformation, Dagalo said.

“We are ready to deal with these talks constructively, and we look forward to them constituting a major step towards peace and stability and the establishment of a new Sudanese state based on justice, equality, and federal rule,” RSF leader announced.
