Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, and UN relief chief Martin Griffith in a phone call on Tuesday discussed the situation in Sudan and ways to deliver aid to the civilian population.
Dagalo and Griffiths deliberated on streamlining the passage of humanitarian aid convoys through Gezeira State to Kordofan, Darfur, White Nile, Khartoum, and other regions in Sudan.
The RSF leader underscored the critical necessity for ongoing humanitarian efforts in Kordofan and Darfur, stressing the urgent need for sustained support in these areas.
The talks between two leaders also focused on enhancing initiatives to ensure the safety of civilians in regions under our protection.
Dagalo reiterated RSF’s unwavering dedication to upholding international humanitarian law, safeguarding civilians, and promoting cooperation with all humanitarian entities to facilitate and enhance their operations in these areas.
Sudan has since April 15, 2023 been plunged into a civil war pitting army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan against RSF Commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
The conflict has resulted in a devastating toll, with over 12,190 casualties and the displacement of more than seven million people, according to estimates by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project and UN figures, respectively.
Mediation efforts have faced significant obstacles due to deep-seated animosity between the rival factions. Despite Burhan’s administration continuing to issue statements as Sudan’s government, Dagalo’s Rapid Support Forces assert control over Khartoum’s streets, Darfur, and a substantial part of Al-Jazira, once Sudan’s vital agricultural region.
