Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Thursday announced they had shot down a warplane belonging to General al-Burhan’s forces (SAF) and its “extremist allies linked to the former regime.”
The aircraft had been engaged in dropping barrel bombs on civilians in various cities all across Sudan, RSF said.
The wreckage of the warplane was discovered scattered to the east of the city of El Fasher.
Supported by its “extremist backers from the National Congress Party” and allied mercenaries, the SAF has relentlessly bombed El Fasher, dropping over 20 barrel bombs daily, RSF said.
SAF’s relentless onslaught resulted in hundreds of civilian deaths and widespread destruction of infrastructure and homes, RSF added.
Sudan has been mired by fighting between the army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who is the head of the ruling Sovereign Council, and the RSF.
At least 13,900 people have been killed and more than eight million displaced in the conflict that started in April 2023, according to UN figures.
Several cease-fire agreements brokered by Saudi Arabia and US mediators have failed to end the violence.
