Sudan’s Sumud alliance meets AU, IGAD to push for war resolution

A delegation from Sudan’s Sumud alliance, led by former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, is holding talks with the African Union’s High-Level Mechanism and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to explore ways to end the country’s ongoing war.

The Sumud alliance emerged after the dissolution of the Taqaddum coordination body, quickly engaging in discussions with international and regional envoys.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Sumud confirmed it was attending meetings at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa to “consult on advancing efforts to end the war and achieve lasting peace in Sudan.” The group emphasized its commitment to addressing the country’s humanitarian crisis and seeking solutions to halt the bloodshed.

During the discussions, the alliance is advocating for an African-led approach to mediation, stressing that Sudan’s crisis must be resolved through a locally driven, peaceful process that tackles the root causes of the conflict. It also reaffirmed its stance that any resolution should align with the goals of Sudan’s December Revolution and exclude remnants of the former regime.

Hamdok previously held talks with African officials on the sidelines of last week’s African Union summit in Addis Ababa. While he participated in high-level meetings on Sudan’s crisis, the country’s junta leader, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, was absent due to Sudan’s suspended AU membership.
