Sudan’s TASIS mourns Dr. Ibrahim Zurayba after short illness in Kampala

Sudan’s Founding Sudan Alliance (TASIS) announced the death of Dr. Ibrahim Zurayba in Kampala after a short illness, hailing him as a veteran figure in the pro-democracy movement and a key contributor to the Juba Peace process.

In a statement, TASIS said Zurayba died Tuesday in the Ugandan capital and offered condolences to his family and supporters. The alliance described him as a “distinguished national figure” who devoted his life to public service and the pursuit of “freedom, justice and equality.”

Zurayba served as chief negotiator for the Sudan Liberation Forces Alliance during the talks that culminated in the Juba Peace Agreement signed in October 2020. He later worked within TASIS to shape its governance blueprint, including the Foundational Sudan charter and a proposed transitional constitution.

Colleagues credited Zurayba’s political career to activism that began in his student years and extended to periods of armed struggle, where he advocated civilian rights and inclusive governance. TASIS said those milestones “will stand as testimony to his devotion and integrity.”

The alliance urged supporters to honor Zurayba’s legacy by recommitting to peaceful political change and social cohesion, echoing the group’s call for coexistence and rejection of hate speech.

Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced. TASIS concluded its statement with prayers for mercy and patience for the family, adding the Qur’anic verse, “Indeed we belong to God, and indeed to Him we return.”
