At least four civilians were killed and several others wounded when a suspected Sudanese Armed Forces drone struck a town in North Darfur, according to three sources who spoke to Darfur24 on Wednesday.
The attack targeted Sari, a town in Al-Koma locality located about 100 kilometres northeast of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state.
A local resident said the drone circled above the town before firing more than seven missiles at residential homes, causing deaths, injuries and extensive damage.
Thick smoke rose over the area following the strikes, while terrified residents fled towards nearby forests and valleys in search of safety.
The source said the attack caused casualties among residents and livestock and damaged several homes, adding that local authorities and community members were still assessing the full scale of the destruction.
Another resident told Darfur24 that the strikes hit residential neighbourhoods and the town’s local market, killing at least four civilians.
Several wounded people were reportedly transferred to El Fasher for medical treatment. Their conditions were not immediately known.
The claims could not be independently verified, and the Sudanese army had not immediately commented on the reported attack.
The use of drones has escalated across several Sudanese states since fighting erupted between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023. Both military and civilian locations have increasingly come under drone attack.
In May, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said drone strikes had killed at least 880 civilians between January and April, accounting for more than 80 percent of recorded conflict-related civilian deaths during that period.
