The Sudan Founding Alliance (TASIS) government has appointed new directors to six universities across Darfur as part of its efforts to restore higher education and rebuild public institutions in territories under its administration.
Prime Minister Mohamed Hassan al-Taishi issued Decision No. 40 appointing senior academics to lead universities in Nyala, El-Fasher, Zalingei, El Geneina, El Daein and Al-Salam.
Under the decision, Professor Abdel Ghani Abu al-Qasim Adam Rijal was appointed director of the University of Nyala, while Professor Adam Hassan Adam al-Haj will lead the University of El-Fasher.
Dr Awadallah Ibrahim al-Douma was named director of the University of Zalingei, and Dr al-Bashir Abdullah al-Bashir al-Nazif was appointed to head Al-Salam University.
Dr Fadlallah Hamdan Abkar Qadim will lead the University of El Geneina, while Dr al-Sadiq Abdullah Adam Juma was appointed director of the University of El Daein.
The decision directs relevant government institutions to implement the appointments immediately.
The appointments follow an earlier restructuring of higher education institutions under the TASIS government, which included the removal of university administrators and the dissolution of governing councils.
The government has presented the restructuring as part of a broader programme to restore educational services, protect academic records and revive institutions affected by Sudan’s continuing war.
TASIS previously organised Sudanese secondary certificate examinations in territories under its administration, allowing students whose education had been interrupted by the conflict to continue their academic progression.
Efforts to rehabilitate university buildings and restore academic activities are also under way in parts of Darfur.
The latest appointments mark another step in the government’s efforts to establish functioning civilian institutions and expand public services in areas under its control.
