TASIS condemns SAF drone strike on WFP truck convoy in Mellit

The Sudan Founding Alliance (TASIS) condemned what it called a “criminal” SAF drone strike on a World Food Programme convoy in Mellit, North Darfur, saying 16 relief trucks were targeted on Wednesday and several were destroyed. TASIS accused the Port Sudan junta of waging a systematic campaign to starve civilians and violate international humanitarian law.

In a statement on Wednesday, TASIS said the attack mirrors the June 3 SAF ambush near Al-Koma that targeted a joint UN convoy, arguing the pattern shows an intent to obstruct food and medical aid while using civilians as shields in and around El Fasher. TASIS urged regional and international bodies to denounce the strike and warned that those responsible will face legal accountability under the transitional constitutional framework.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) also condemned the incident, saying its units had facilitated the convoy’s passage through RSF-held corridors before SAF drones torched the trucks and struck Mellit’s market, causing civilian casualties. RSF called the strike a grave breach of the Geneva Conventions and demanded an independent investigation and sanctions on perpetrators.

Earlier in the day, RSF reported that 16 WFP-marked trucks were hit in Mellit and that fires spread through the cargo. UN agencies had not issued formal confirmation at the time of publication, and General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) did not immediately comment. North Darfur has seen a surge in SAF drone and artillery strikes in recent days, while aid groups continue to push life-saving shipments via the Tiné corridor.

TASIS reiterated its commitment to civilian protection and to securing safe corridors for evacuations and aid deliveries, saying relief access is a legal and moral obligation, not a bargaining chip.
