TASIS govt blames SLM for blocking cholera response teams

Sudan’s Health Minister in the Tasis government, Alaa El-Din Nugud, has accused the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) of obstructing health teams from reaching areas hit by a cholera outbreak in eastern Jebel Marra.

Nugud said on Sunday that the group, led by Abdel Wahid Mohamed Nour, has prevented medical workers from accessing several affected localities.

He urged the SLM leadership to cooperate with authorities in curbing the spread of infectious diseases, warning that the restrictions could worsen the crisis.

The minister said most regions under the Tasis coalition’s control have recovered from recent epidemics, praising the work of health teams and partner organisations.

He added that the ministry continues to coordinate with international and local bodies to address medical shortages and strengthen disease control efforts.

Meanwhile, the ministry’s Director General, Mustafa Al-Barmaki, confirmed three new cases of dengue fever and said a response strategy has been launched.

He acknowledged limited resources but expressed determination to contain outbreaks with continued support from donors and partners.

According to official figures, cholera has infected over 5,800 people and claimed at least 275 lives across 13 localities before a vaccination drive began.
