TASIS reopens children’s hospital in El-Fasher as services return

Sudan’s Government of Peace and Unity has reopened a children’s hospital in El-Fasher, North Darfur, following rehabilitation work aimed at restoring essential services to the war-affected city.

Prime Minister Mohamed Hassan al-Taishi inaugurated the facility, announcing that it now has the capacity to receive at least 150 children daily.

The reopening forms part of a broader government programme to rehabilitate health facilities, restore public institutions and rebuild infrastructure damaged during the conflict.

Al-Taishi said the administration was working to restore normal life in El-Fasher, where several public services had been disrupted by years of fighting.

He also announced the resumption of operations at the public prosecutor’s office and three courts, alongside efforts to reopen schools and improve access to water, healthcare and other essential services.

The prime minister praised medical workers and local communities for their efforts to sustain healthcare provision despite the destruction caused by the war.

He said rebuilding El-Fasher would require more than restoring damaged buildings, stressing the importance of strengthening social cohesion and reviving the city’s economy.

Al-Taishi also renewed his appeal for displaced residents to return, saying the government was preparing public institutions and residential areas to accommodate returning families.

Interior Minister Suleiman Sandal said the reopening demonstrated the administration’s commitment to rebuilding institutions and expanding public services.

The government said additional healthcare facilities would be rehabilitated as reconstruction efforts continue.

El-Fasher came under TASIS-aligned forces’ control in October 2025 following prolonged fighting against Sudan’s military and allied armed groups.

The government has since announced several measures intended to restore security, public administration and basic services in the North Darfur capital.
