Teacher dies after release from SAF detention in South Kordofan

A primary school teacher in South Kordofan has died hours after his release from a SAF run detention facility in the town of Dilling, amid allegations that he was tortured while in custody, according to local sources and a teachers’ committee.

Imam Al Dhay, a teacher from the Al Farshaya area, died at his home on Monday, 17 December, after suffering kidney failure that relatives say began during his detention at facilities operated by SAF Brigade 53.

A family member told local media that Al Dhay had been arrested alongside a colleague, Professor Tartour Al Dhay, who died last November under similar circumstances following detention.

In a statement seen by local media, the Sudanese Teachers Committee said Imam Al Dhay died as a result of injuries sustained through torture while being held by military intelligence at the SAF’s 54th Infantry Brigade in Dilling. The committee said both teachers were detained for several months without judicial warrants or formal charges.

The committee called for an independent investigation into the deaths, accountability for those responsible, and the immediate release of all teachers being held in arbitrary detention.
