Turkey offers to facilitate peace talks in Sudan

Turkey is ready to assist in resolving the conflict in Sudan, Turkish Ambassador to Khartoum, Fatih Yildiz, said on Thursday.

Ambassador Yildiz emphasized Turkey’s willingness to work within any framework agreed upon by the Sudanese people and government.

He highlighted Turkey’s trusted position among Sudan’s key actors, stressing Ankara’s readiness to play a constructive role.

Yildiz stated that Turkey’s approach differs from other international actors, as it is based on mutual respect and consensus, rather than coercion.

He noted that Turkey’s relations with Sudan have always avoided dictating terms.

On Turkey’s humanitarian aid, particularly following the recent dam collapse in eastern Sudan, Yildiz said that Turkey has consistently provided aid. “Following the flood disaster, we have intensified efforts to deliver additional humanitarian assistance,” he said.

The collapse of the Arbat Dam in Port Sudan in August, due to heavy rains, caused significant damage to 20 villages and resulted in numerous casualties. Turkey has been actively involved in providing aid to those affected.

Addressing Sudan’s ongoing conflict, Yildiz reaffirmed Turkey’s support for the 2023 Jeddah Declaration, a peace agreement aimed at ending the war. He noted Turkey’s commitment to helping the Sudanese government achieve peace.

Yildiz also emphasized the strong bond between Turkey and Sudan, which he believes ensures the stability of relations between the two nations. He added that Turkish institutions, such as TIKA and the Yunus Emre Institute, are eager to resume their activities in Sudan despite ongoing challenges.

The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis, with nearly 18,800 deaths and millions displaced. Yildiz urged the international community to give more attention to Sudan’s crisis, which he said is being overshadowed by other conflicts.
