U.S. envoy to visit region amid Sudan’s humanitarian crisis

U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello will embark on a diplomatic tour to Kenya, Uganda, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt starting Wednesday, the U.S. State Department announced.

His mission focuses on addressing the Sudanese crisis through meetings with Sudanese civil society leaders, host country officials, and multilateral partners to discuss strategies for improving humanitarian access, safeguarding civilians, and fostering efforts to end the ongoing conflict.

During his visit, Perriello will also reaffirm the U.S. commitment to supporting a transition to civilian-led governance in Sudan, as stated by the department.

Perriello’s trip comes amid Sudan’s worsening humanitarian emergency, with 6.5 million people at risk of starvation and 25 million urgently in need of aid. In a recent post on X, he criticized General al-Burhan’s SAF for obstructing emergency relief efforts, noting that the Sudanese Humanitarian Aid Commission has allowed only 10% of aid supplies at Port Sudan to be distributed.

“Sudan’s Humanitarian Aid Commission only permitted 10% of the aid in Port Sudan to reach those in dire need of food and medicine,” Perriello stated.

“For those suffering in Kadugli or Khartoum, in Nyala or the north, we should find common ground on how to streamline the flow of emergency food and medicine to every corner of Sudan with the greatest possible speed.”
