UAE and US discuss steps to end Sudan’s war and protect civilians

Abu Dhabi’s foreign minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan has held talks with Musad Boulos, senior adviser to the US president for Arab and African affairs, on ways to halt Sudan’s civil war and ease its humanitarian toll, the UAE’s foreign ministry said.

Meeting in Abu Dhabi, the two officials reviewed the wider regional situation, with a particular focus on the “tragic developments” of the conflict in Sudan. They discussed how to reinforce regional and international efforts aimed at stopping the fighting, protecting civilians and ensuring unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid.

Abdullah bin Zayed praised what he described as U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to achieve lasting security and stability in Sudan, and said the UAE supports those efforts and all regional and international initiatives seeking an immediate, unconditional ceasefire. Such a step, he said, is essential to ending the suffering of the Sudanese people and supporting their legitimate aspirations for security, stability and a dignified life.

He reiterated the UAE’s backing for a civilian-led political process to resolve the crisis, stressing the need to “spare no effort” to end a civil war that has raged for more than two years.

The meeting also touched on a number of issues related to the strategic relationship between the United States and the UAE, according to the readout.
