UAE, Ethiopia urge Sudan ceasefire

The UAE and Ethiopia have called for an immediate and permanent halt to military operations in Sudan, stressing the need to ensure humanitarian access and to launch a transitional process leading to an independent civilian government.

The call came during talks in Addis Ababa between UAE Minister of State Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan and Ethiopian officials. Discussions covered bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments.

Both sides rejected attacks targeting civilians and humanitarian workers, emphasising that ending the conflict in Sudan remains the responsibility of the warring parties themselves.

The two sides also reviewed the outcomes of the high level humanitarian conference on Sudan, hosted jointly by the UAE and Ethiopia in cooperation with IGAD and the African Union during the February 2025 summit. The conference focused on mobilising regional and international support for the humanitarian response.

They underlined the need for a humanitarian truce that would pave the way for a lasting ceasefire, facilitate aid delivery to all areas, and open the door to an inclusive and transparent political process.

Talks also addressed bilateral cooperation, reaffirming the strength of the strategic partnership between the two countries and its role in supporting security and stability.

Regional and international developments related to peace and security were discussed, alongside global priorities including Ethiopia’s preparations to host COP32 and cooperation in following up on the outcomes of COP28.

The two sides also referred to the 2026 UN Water Conference, which will be hosted by the UAE in partnership with Senegal, highlighting the importance of cooperation on water technology and sustainable solutions.
