UN: 500,000 refugees flee to South Sudan amid Sudan conflict

The UN’s humanitarian agency has disclosed that more than 500,000 individuals fleeing the conflict in neighboring Sudan have sought refuge in South Sudan.

According to the latest situational report on the Sudan crisis from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha), a total of 516,658 people have crossed into South Sudan since the outbreak of fighting in Sudan on April 15, 2023.

The report highlights that approximately 81% of the arrivals were South Sudanese nationals, while 18% were Sudanese refugees.

Ocha noted a significant surge in the number of Sudanese refugees and asylum-seekers entering South Sudan this month, emphasizing the challenges posed to local authorities and humanitarian partners by the rising number of arrivals through the border town of Renk.
