The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence between al Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces in North Darfur.
Fierce clashes in the region’s capital, El Fasher, have caused immense suffering for civilians, according to a UN statement released on Sunday.
UN spokesman Farhan Haq said the fighting is having a catastrophic impact on the civilian population, already grappling with a dire humanitarian crisis.
The situation in El Fasher is particularly dire, with famine conditions confirmed in nearby Zamzam camp and likely prevalent in other displacement sites within the city.
The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has called on all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law and protect civilians.
He urged them to allow safe passage for those fleeing the violence and to facilitate unhindered access for humanitarian aid workers.
Guterres has reiterated his demand for an immediate ceasefire and a return to political dialogue.
The ongoing conflict, which began in April 2023, has resulted in the deaths of over 12,000 people and the displacement of nearly 6.8 million.
Despite several ceasefires brokered by Saudi Arabia and the United States, the fighting has persisted.
The UN warns that the humanitarian situation in Sudan is deteriorating rapidly, with millions of people in desperate need of assistance.
